In the final seconds, unbridled joy erupted for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández bundled in a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola howling at the heavens and gifted the temporary Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's most pronounced managerial mismatch, making the memory of Fernández's pivotal intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old for years to come.

A Stark Contrast in Pedigree

On the home bench stood the generation's pre-eminent figure, a man with 40 trophies for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a former coach at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had worked in City's own academy and stepped up to make his first-team debut after being temporarily promoted from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, headlined by Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed close-to-impossible.

The battle grew increasingly fractious, with Delap yellow-carded after a melee, and City's defensive pillars, Rúben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, both forced off injured. Despite late Chelsea pressure, a second goal seemed to be escaping them, with Cole Palmer failing to connect in front of goal.
